Green algae can come in lots of different shapes and sizes, but they cannot bend and twist like other protists. This is because they have a wall around the cell that makes up their body. But it means they can be the most beautiful shapes.
Like plants on the land, these algae use sunlight to make their food. They live close to the surface of the water and when there is a lot of sunlight they can grow in large numbers and can make a pond or lake look green in the summer.
The oceans are full of green algae which work like the grasslands and forests to make food for all the other creatures, and also to protect our planet against climate change.
